College: Indiana University

Major/Minor: Percussion Performance Major

Arts Background: I've always enjoyed performing in some way. When I was younger, I performed magic and even went to circus camp for 5 years. As I got older, though, my focus shifted to music. Long story short: I started playing percussion in the 4th grade. In high school, I started to take the instrument more seriously as percussion became my primary focus. I am now a percussion performance major at Indiana University!

Why did you pursue an internship at the Kennedy Center?

In college, I started taking classes in business administration. Excited at the prospect of integrating performance and arts management, I decided to pursue a career in arts administration. The Kennedy Center internship program was exciting to me because, having already worked with smaller arts organizations, I would be able to gain experience at a

large performing arts center. Not to mention, the Kennedy Center is an absolute icon in the and a leader withing the performing arts industry.

What do you do in your internship placement?

Everyday on the job is a bit different because the NSO Operations internship is organized by a weekly set of responsibilities. Typically, when assisting with a concert production, I am tasked with drafting tech schedules, delivering purchase orders to finance, distributing call sheets, and scheduling piano tunings. I also get to shadow and assist the NSO backstage during rehearsals and concerts, both on-site at the Kennedy Center and off-site at venues such as Wolf Trap, The Anthem, and Basilica.

On the more administrative side, I help with issuing meeting agendas, submitting purchase orders, and maintaining rehearsal room schedules.

What is your favorite project you have worked on?

My favorite project to date was assisting with the Memorial Day Capital Concert. I was interested by and excited to take part in all of the logistical efforts that go into planning such an event. For example , I got to sit-in on the security briefing, supervise the load in, watch the dress rehearsal on the Capital lawn, as well as attend the filming of the concert. After the event, I even got to attend a reception with all of the artists.

I am excited to be a part of this process again when helping with the NSO Fourth of July concert: A Capitol Fourth.

Favorite thing to do in the Kennedy Center: I love being backstage at Concert Hall because hanging on the walls are pictures and notes from past performers.

Favorite thing to do in Washington D.C.: Walk down the street and just EXPLORE! If you are looking for a restaurant recommendation though, I highly endorse Chef Geoff's.

Advice for prospective Kennedy Center interns: Don’t be afraid to reach out, meet people, ask questions, or even ask for an informational interview! People at the Kennedy Center want to help interns succeed and are happy to share their knowledge and experience.
