College: Penn State

Major/Minor: English and Telecommunications Majors, Flute Performance Minor

Arts Background: Band/orchestra – I’ve played the flute since fifth grade.

Why did you pursue an internship at the Kennedy Center?

During my last semester, I was the marketing/communications intern for Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State. That internship made me realize that I wanted to pursue working at performing arts centers; it was a place that I could use my writing and communications skills to support an area that I love. I had heard about the Kennedy Center internship from a former roommate, and I knew it would be the perfect place to pursue my goals.

What do you do in your internship placement?

As the Marketing: Editorial Communications intern, I work on various advertising copy alongside the other writers. I write radio spots, postcards, brochures, and longer research-based medium posts. The bulk of my work is organizing and writing subject lines for emails, which is an important marketing and revenue source here.

What is your favorite project you have worked on?

In October, dance programming will be hosting “Merce Cunningham at 100,” a celebration of the hugely influential choreographer. I had the opportunity to write a 1000+ word medium post about Cunningham’s life, his techniques, and two of his works. It was a great learning experience for me, as I have no background in dance. Also, receiving feedback and approval from the dance programming team on the post was so rewarding for me.

Favorite thing to do in the Kennedy Center: Whenever I was here for a show in the evenings, I took time to look over the

Potomac River on the Terrace level and watch the sun set.

Favorite thing to do in Washington D.C.:

I have some great memories simply walking along the National Mall with friends.

Advice for prospective Kennedy Center interns:

Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. I volunteered to help backstage during the NSO Pops: Apollo 11: A 50th Anniversary Concert and had such a memorable experience!
